(1823) English physician and scientist Edward Jenner passes away. He is known as the pioneer of the world’s first vaccine, which was developed against smallpox.

(1891) Canadian neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield was born. He is known for improving the techniques of brain surgery and mapping the function of a number of brain regions.

(1904) American physiologist Ancel Keys was born. He is best known for his hypothesis that a diet high in saturated fats causes cardiovascular disease.
