(1453) German doctor, astronomer, and astrologer Johannes Engel was born. Along with practicing medicine, he is known for writing calendars and planetary tables.

(1830) German physician, anatomist, anthropologist, paleontologist, and inventor Samuel Thomas von Sömmerring died. He is known for discovering the macula, a part of the human eye responsible for sharp central vision.

(1842) Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen was born. The beer brand Carlsberg is named after him.
