(1941) American environmental scientist, teacher, and writer Donella Meadows is born. She is best known for writing The Limits to Growth, a book describing the long-term global trends in populations and the environment.

(1950) American syndicated columnist, author, political commentator, and physician Charles Krauthammer is born. He was involved in the creation of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders III, which helps clinicians classify and diagnose mental disorders.

(1991) The US Department of Justice announces that Exxon will pay $1 billion for the cleanup of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which occurred in Alaska.
