(1881) Swiss physiologist Walter Rudolf Hess is born. He shared the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for mapping out brain areas responsible for controlling internal organs.

(1931) English-American chemist and toxicologist David Peakall is born. His research on the insecticides DDT and DDE helped lead to DDT’s ban in the US after he determined the chemicals caused thinning of eggshells.

(1968) Over 6,000 sheep are found dead as a result of nerve gas testing in Skull Valley, Utah.
