(1879) Canadian physician-scientist Maud Menten is born. She made great contributions to the understanding of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, infections such as salmonella, and the function of the kidney.

(1985) Rick Hansen, a Canadian paraplegic athlete, begins his circumnavigation around the globe in a wheelchair to raise awareness for spinal cord injury medical research.

(1987) The Food and Drug Administration approves AZT (azidothymidine), an anti-AIDS drug.
