(1858) Canadian businessman Washington Atlee Burpee is born. He was the founder of W. Atlee Burpee & Company (now known as Burpee Seeds), which at the time of his death, was the largest seed company in the world.

(1872) American food scientist and microbiologist Samuel Cate Prescott is born. His research focused on food health and safety, public health, and on microbiology.

(1922) The American Birth Control League, which is the forerunner of Planned Parenthood, is incorporated.
