(1899) African American research chemist Percy Lavon Julian is born. He was the first person to synthesize the natural product physostigmine, which is now used to treat glaucoma and delayed gastric emptying.

(1908) Japanese electronics industrialist Masaru Ibuka is born. He was the creator of Sony, which now manufactures a number of electronics including ultrasound and radiology equipment.

(1954) Scottish psychologist and academic David Perrett is born. He is the Professor of Psychology at the University of St. Andrews, where he conducted research on face perception.
