(1981) Dr. Harrison performs the world’s first human open fetal surgery.

(1986) A nuclear reactor accident occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in (now) Ukraine, creating the world’s worst nuclear disaster and causing large amounts of radiation exposure.

(1932) British-born Canadian biochemist Michael Smith is born. He shared a Nobel Prize in 1993 for his work in site-directed mutagenesis.
