(1902) French microbiologist André Michel Lwoff is born. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1965 for the discovery of the mechanism that some viruses (which he named proviruses) use to infect bacteria.

(1886) Pharmacist John Pemberton first sells a carbonated beverage named “Coca-Cola” as a patent medicine.

(1980) The World Health Organization confirms the eradication of smallpox.
