May 10th:

(1) (1556) German physician and botanist Leonhart Fuchs passes away. He published an herbal book about plants and their medicinal uses.

(2) (1901) One of the UK’s most well-known and controversial scientists, John Desmond Bernal, was born. He worked and published extensively on many science topics, including vitamin D, vitamin B, cholesterol, and the origin of life.

(3) (1930) American scientist and physicist George E. Smith was born. He invented the charge-coupled device, which is now used in digital imaging, important for taking photographs.
