(1) (1896) The first successful heart surgery is performed by Ludwig Rehn.

(2) (1908) American cardiac surgeon, innovator, scientist, medical educator Michael DeBakey is born. He is known for his work in treating heart patients and for contributing to the development of the mobile army surgical hospital.

(3) (1917) Australian–British chemist John Cornforth is born. He shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering details about the biosynthesis of cholesterol.
