(1876) American inventor and chemist Carleton Ellis is born. He holds 753 patents, one of which is for margarine, which he synthesized from vegetable oil.

(1947) Dutch botanist and geneticist Jantina Tammes passes away. Some of her research focused on plant physiology and was the first professor of Genetics in the Netherlands.

(1994) Sierra Leonean academic, diplomat, and physician Davidson Nicol passes away. He was the first person to analyze the breakdown of insulin in the human body.
