(1) (1818) German physician and physiologist Emil du Bois-Reymond is born. He is remembered for discovering the nerve action potential, the way in which nerves communicate with one another and send signals.

(2) (1867) Polish-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie is born. She is known for her work in radioactivity, and for being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the only woman to win it twice.

(3) (1991) Magic Johnson retires from the NBA as he announces that he is infected with HIV.
