(1) (1553) Italian physician and botanist Prospero Alpini is born. His work De Medicina Egyptiorum is said to contain the first published EUropean account of the coffee plant.

(2) (1905) English physiologist John Burdon-Sanderson passes away. He is remembered for his research on disease outbreaks, focusing on cattle plague, cholera and penicillin.  

(3) (1992) The first smartphone, dubbed the IBM Simon, is introduced at COMDEX in Las Vegas.
