(1) (1923) American otologist, physician and medical researcher William F. House is born. He is known for inventing the cochlear implant, a hearing aid commonly used today to restore hearing.
(2) (1925) American biochemist and molecular endocrinologist Martin Rodbell is born. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his co-discovery of G-proteins, proteins responsible for transmitting signals from stimuli outside of the cell to the inside of the cell.
(3) (1952) The New York Daily News reports on the first notable case of sex reassignment surgery.
